Pavel Zoubok: Sweet & Savory: Group Show

Pavel Zoubok Gallery's latest group show Sweet & Savory was a triumph and sweet success (no pun intended). This group show features 18 artists all form different ages, background and education levels. Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt's St. Avatar of Novocane, foil, plastic, cut out of pictures is an ode to cook Paula Deen. Barbara Sandler's Chiquita's Revenge, oil on paper is an image of a lone shoe sans foot about to step on a vengeful banana peel while Ms. Villainess Chiquita herself looks on with reserve. Don Joint's Strawberry Shortcake, mixed media with images of cakes floating in mid air, with a Japanese Geisha in the mid ground and a row of raffles ticket placed in the fore ground. Collagist CK Wilde's The Last Piece of Pie, currency collage on panel, inspired by the master of sweets artist Wayne Theibaud. Mark Wagner's Hand To Mouth - or - What You Eat What You Are, currency collage on panel, a collage of George Washington being feed a dollar bill. Ruth Marten's Frites & Frills, watercolor on print, with an image of a Victorian lady inverted in the upside down position with french fries sprouting out from the bottom of her dress. Pat Lasch #117, an image of a cake beautifully decorated. Orly Cogan's Confections, mixed media with an array of desserts displayed on a banquet table. Al Souza's Carnival, puzzle parts, glue and wood of colorfully charged images reminiscent of Brazil's infamous carnival festival held sometimes in February or March. John Avelluto's J Heart M, acrylic paint films on panel, an image of a pizza on top of a picnic table cloth and a wooden cutting board. Barton Lidice Benes' Petit Fours, images of A.I.D.S. drugs on paper, these 9 images of AIDS medications delicately displayed like dessert in paper cookie holders. Jean Lowe's What Should Satan Eat? is enamel on papier-mache, hey even the Prince of Darkness needs to stay healthy so he can create war, famine, destruction and misery in the world. Julie Allen's Fruit Tart sculpture, made with/of silk thread, vinyl, marbles and liquid vinyl. This beautiful sculpture displays kiwi's, strawberries and an array of fruits. Scott Teplin's Tiny Nuts, mixed media, a plate full of donuts draped with pink frosting. James Jaxxa's Ice Pops, made of plastic resin, wood and craft sticks popsicles in an array of rainbow colors.John Evans, December 3, 1989, mixed media collage of champagne bottle labels. Colette's Mata Hari and the Stolen Potatoes, mixed media of a vine of potatoes painted in gold and finally we come to Joe Brainard's Untitled (Sundae) mixed media collage of an ice cream sundae. This group show was a hit and a pleasure to see a mix of different mediums and creative cohesiveness.  See Sweet & Savory thru June 23rd at Pavel Zoubok Gallery - Madame J.
