Laurel Nakadate's 356 Days: A Catalogue of Tears currently at Leslie Tonkonow is on view until tomorrow July 9th. Laurel's show unfortunately left me more depressed than what I already am; it's sad to see somebody crying, depressed and/or anxious. But on the bright side, Laurel's photographic journal/journey did impress me; her commitment to go into that "dark" place that most actors have to go to when performing their craft. Laurel was committed to "cry" everyday for a full year. Unfortunately, for Laurel she had to dredge up deep emotional wounds that quite possibly haven't healed in order to "make" her craft/work. I can't say that her work cheered me up but her willingness, commitment and ability to do so made me happy to know that she loves art enough to put herself out on a limb, so to speak. See it till tomorrow (July 9th). - Madame J.
