El Museo del Barrio's latest biennial The [S] Files 2011 and yes that's S for "street" as in street art; ya know the genre of art that really doesn't enough respect nor positive recognition. Surprised by the shows lack of word-around-town talk or the lack of "you've gotta see" The [S] Files at El Museo. When I visited the museum yesterday (and yes I'm ashamed that I haven't gotten to the show sooner") but guess what I hadn't heard nor read any talk or buzz about this great show (that really should be located in one place as oppose to the other five satellite locations (Chashama at the Donnell, BRIC Rotunda Gallery, Lehman College Art Gallery, Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance and Times Square Alliance) displaying/showing the other artists who also participated in The [S] Files and their works of art. I was impressed and joyful to view the three galleries displaying an array of museum worthy and talented artists and their works. This show featuring works by Latino, Caribbean and Latin American artists depicting their understanding, experience and take on urban and "Latino" life. They artistically rendered their visions on canvas, paper, found objects; murals, photography, sculptural and arts and crafts (felt). Famous, well known and locally known artists include; Lee Quinones (who worked around the same time as Basquiat), Lady Pink (who the hell doesn't know about her; if you don't you must live under a rock or in a cave or a well). Undoubtedly The [S] Files hasn't received the recognition that it deserves. I'm pleading GO SEE THE [S] FILES, support this museum that doesn't receive the same funding, support and "advertising" as The Met, The Guggenheim, The Whitney, The Brooklyn and MOMA. If you're Hispanic and haven't seen it SHAME ON YOU! Enough (Jewish) guilt. Go spend $9.00 for adults, $5.00 students and seniors and free admission for members and children under the age of 12. Below is a complete list of the artists that participated in the show. Must see before it closes January 8, 2012. - Madame J.
