Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art's current exhibit
CIRCA: 1986 on view until July 2012 is a fantastic show that reminded me of when I was coming of age in 1986 (I was 12 years old). Graffiti, WHAM, Culture Club,
neon/dayglo clothes and jewelry, electronic music (remember the "
keytar") etc; all of the fun and grand things the 80's had to offer. HVCCA was founded by
Dr. Livia and Marc Livia Staus art collectors whose love of art (which they felt) needed to be introduced into the
Peekskill community. The exterior of the art center which, was formerly an automotive facility, definitely doesn't "jive" with it's art related interior; but once inside the layout reminds one of a Manhattan,
Chelsea art gallery. This impressive collection which includes works by great artists such as:
Julian Schnabel,
David Wojnarowicz, Ashley
Bickerton, James Brown (no not Mr. King Soul himself),
Gilbert & George,
Jeff Koons,
Elizabeth Murray,
Richard Prince, Rick
Prol, and many others. My favorite works in this collection includes: James Brown
Eleggua II, Walter Dahn
Trying to Look Like a Flower, Nancy Dwyer
Fate Built, Gilbert & George
The Long March, Julian Schnabel
Aborigine Painting, John Walker
The Chamber (Oceania V), David Wojnarowicz
Excavating the Temples of the New Gods,
Folkert de Jong Mount Maslow, Dieter Hacker
Atem, Rona Pondick
Little Bathers, Rick Prol
I Have This Cat and Tim Rollins & K.O.S
BFA School of VX-Men, 1968. The staff were friendly and helpful (thanks
Jessica); Dr. and Mr. Straus' art collection is impressive and eclectic; the Straus' collection, is a collection worth viewing, this exhibit is great and worth the trip to Peekskill. But I also needed to mention that the HVCCA collection also includes six generous art collectors who have been so kind and philanthropic enough to lend HVCCA their works to complete CIRCA:1986; so please stop in Peekskill which happens to be a charming town with great shops and great art. You have plenty of time to see this show before it closes July 2012 but you'll probably want to see it a second time. -
