Stefanie Gutheil's second show at Mike Weiss Gallery titled  Dreckige Katze currently on view til October 8th is a surrealist marvel; Dreckige Katze  literal translation is "dirty, raunchy cat". Stefanie's artwork is grotesque while still engaging; there is so much subject matter that her works keep my mind and eyes busy for hours. There is so much psychological drama in her works that it can induce thought provoking scenarios and discussions in ones mind; Stefanie's work has so much imagery and craziness who can not love her work. While most times when I go to visit a show in general I will walk into a gallery and in a matter of about four minutes I walk out because some contemporary works of art can be plain, bland or "not much to it" Stefanie's work kept me at the gallery for about twenty minutes. I felt the need to study each work. This show ends October 8th which means there's not a lot of time left but a week should give one enough "heads up" to go and see "Dirty Cat". - Madame J.

January Jones: She-Devil Seductress or Misunderstood Mama?

January "Janny" Jones "Hmm which man will I pick"?
Janny at an awards ceremony

Janny being bothered by the press while being pregnant

Jason Sudeikis "Hmm I thought I was the only contender"?

Bobby Flay "Here Janny I've got a little sumpin' sumpin' for you"

Claudia Schiffer and Matthew Vaughn (thought-bubble) "Shit Janny I can't believe there were 500 guys before and after me"

Xander Berkeley "Damn I'm lucky"

Article in Amny.com (page 11 of September 26, 2011)

So when I published my post "Paulina Porizkova" back on August 19th, I wrote a blurb about Claudia Schiffer's "randy" husband The X-Men movie director Matthew Vaughn. Actress January Jones whom aside from also starring in The X-Men movie is also in the AMC t.v. series Mad Men, about a bunch of horny advertising exec's and their professional and personal exploitations. January and Matthew were rumored to have had an affair and he may have gotten January pregnant. Janny's (my nickname for January) son Xander Dane Jones was born on September 13th (her son's name is just as stupid as hers). Well I wasn't aware that Janny had dated SNL funny man Jason Sudeikis; they broke up after dating for about seven months. Well in the recent saga/drama that surrounds the ever talented and beautiful "Janny" seems to have "expanded" the list of possible "baby daddy's" to include: famous redheaded chef (no it's not Mario Batali I'm sure his wife can "exhale" without worry. I think?) No the other chef is none other than Bobby Flay; (he's not on my hot redheads list; he shouldn't be anyways, especially if he cheated on his third wife). Hey Bobby you're a DOUCHE! Another actor added to Janny's ever bloated list is actor Xander Berkeley. Seems Janny and ScarJo have lots in common; (sans the baby) beautiful actresses whom have a penchant for "unavailable" men. Ladies of the world we women have the P-Power; yes I know there's a shortage of morally decent, honest, intelligent, educated men without legal drama and/or bench warrants out for their arrests who are also straight. Janny and ScarJo are beautiful, famous and wealthy women, so what about the other billions of women whom haven't gotten their chances in the "love" department?; ya know to have a healthy happy marriage and/or relationship? Poor Janny, her life must suck big time because, she's young, blonde, beautiful, famous, wealthy and has a job that she probably loves, and she's making lots and lots of money; oh and has a baby who'll probably love her unconditionally if she doesn't screw him up before the age of five. Yep her life sucks ass! Oh yeah and she also has "unavailable" men throwing themselves at her, yep it's tough! Remember Janny if the rumors are true and you've been shacking up with the "unavailable" life can only get better for you and the rest of the "boyfriend/husband-stealing gang" you ladies come from the; "The Seduction Club" should remember karma has a way of catching up with you and biting you on your luscious asses. Lest we forget Athina Onassis Roussel de Miranda, LeAnn Rimes, Jerry Hall, Liz Taylor, Jennifer Lopez, Zsa Zsa Gabor. etc etc etc. - Madame J.

Melissa Brown Panel Starers, 2011 woodcut on dyed canvas w/stencil

Westbeth Gallery's Lehman (College) Downtown Faculty Group Show is running from September 15th - 25th; this wonderful show is compiled of works by faculty from Lehman College's art department ,the Lehman College math department and the Lehman College Art Gallery (which is located inside of the art department but not part of Lehman College-CUNY) Ms. Susan Hoeltzel, Ms. Xochitl Higuchi and Ms. Patricia Cazorla director, education curator and curatorial assistant of Lehman College Art Gallery, respectively. With the different array of mediums to include: oil on canvas, acrylic on canvas, photography, sculptures, ceramic, digital media, watercolor on paper etc. Artist and associate professor and chair of the art department Flavia Bacarella employed her skill and expertise of woodcuts and the subject of animals and greenery; whimsical comes to mind when I view her works. Susan Hoeltzel's beautifully rendered organic matter; Susan's type of work and subject matter (mainly things ephemeral) is something I can appreciate; soft delicate, girly, peaceful and down right true to form. How can you not love her work? Like one of my favorite painters (Odilon Redon) I feel a uniquely different likeness. John Belardo's steel sculptural works amaze me; John's hidden talents are revealed. Something I wasn't aware he had. Monumental in subject matter and design it's good to know he teaches sculpture. I loved Melissa Brown's Panel Starers; for me it's reminiscent of Dorothy (from The Wizard of Oz's) journey through the woods encountering the "mean" talking tree. Patricia Cazorla's rendering of architectural structures rendered in blue paint and Michael Ferraro's cgi digital short of eyes and a mouth starring at the viewer with clouds and sky as a backdrop. David Gillison's portraits of an indigenous couple; as well as his collaboration with Robert Schneider from Lehman College's math department; two photograph's of NYC modern architecture. Xochitl Higuchi's (what I interpret as Alice in Wonderland) falling through the rabbit hole and a collage of an "Americanized" woman but she includes images of indigenous caricatures I was impressed with the whimsicalness and skill. Sean McCarthy's odd and intriguing creatures; Sean's highly imaginative make believe world and his fine tuned skill and genius (shows us his steady and talented hand). David Schwittek unbelievable talent at photography and creative eye shows us how some "common" or "everyday" objects have beauty and meaning to them. Charles Seplowin's sinuous and eternally undulating waves of steel adds beauty to a rusty piece of metal; which at first when rusty and in it's original form means nothing but when shaped can be a beautiful thing. Janet Skolnik Lehman's ceramic instructor creates her various organic life forms. Dannielle Tegeder's delicate, aerial geometric analysis. Dannielle an accomplished artist (whom unfortunately is often mistaken to be of a male gender because of the spelling of her first name) shows the world that "Guess what not, all of the great artists and comedians of the world and throughout history are men"! And also she has a bio on Wikipedia (that's when you know you're big when you're on Wikipedia)  Paul Carrellas' series of fish rendered in oil captures the beauty of fish and their vulnerability. And finally Terry Towery's two year odyssey of photographing discarded gloves in the street. Gloves, something that is used and needed on a daily basis by millions of people are often times discarded like trash once their use is completed and fulfilled. See this show before it ends on September 25th. For those of you interested in purchasing works from the artists or any queries please contact the artist in question or reached them in the Lehman College art department. - Madame J.
